Cardio Go-Go

May 17, 2009

Hello, Fantabulous Fitness Folks,
I hope this finds ya’ll well!

I must say that I am amazed that the older i get, the more that clichés (that used to sound so cheesy) are actually true!  Just like: Balance is the key to life.

When it comes to working out, it is key to be sure that you are doing a balance of cardio, strength, and flexibility.  It’s like the triangle of fitness.  Pretty cool, eh?

So, this week, think about how you get your cardio going in order to get your heart pumping quicker.  Hmmmm.  Do you need to add more cardio in?  Do you need to spice things up and do a different kind of cardio?  Are you pushing yourself hard enough with your cardio to get some results?  Are you enjoying the cardio you do as much as possible?

Here are some guidelines when it comes to go-go-cardio:

Get that heart pumping!

  • helps to burn calories
  • makes your heart strong AND increases your lung capacity
  • makes you feel good AND reduces stress AND allows you to sleep better
  • lots of different kinds, just choose the ones that work for you AND be sure to keep it spiced up to keep your mind and muscles challenged (i.e., hiking outside, treadmill at the gym, taking a class like mine)
  • you should be breathing harder (but still able to talk and be understood) and have a nice little sweat or glow going.  Simply getting on a machine and moving robotically will not make a different unless you are challenging yourself!
  • try for 3-4 days a week for 30 minutes each time
  • in the spirit of balance, there is such thing as too much cardio.  Be sure to take a day off from time to time to let your muscles heal.
  • remember, something is better than nothing!  Even taking 5 minutes at a time and going up the stairs beats nada.
  • if you need use your support system (be it a friend or hiring a personal trainer), DO IT, as your health is your life!

What should your heart rate be during your go-go-cardio?  Check it out!:

Be well and go get your go-go-cardio on!

In peace,
